A stump left in after a removal turns into a slow problem. The wood holds water, draws termites, throws suckers off the root plate, and lifts nearby pavers or concrete as the roots die back. On a slope it's worse, because the disturbed ground around it starts to wash. Grinding it out in one visit clears the lot. Around Ferntree Gully we run two machines depending on access, a narrow walk-behind for tight, sloped backyards, and a bigger tracked grinder for the acreage and bush-block jobs.

Price comes off three things, the stump width at ground level, the species, and how far under you want the wood gone. Most Ferntree Gully customers ask for around 200 to 300mm under, which is enough for fresh turf, paving sand or a shallow garden bed. If you're laying a slab, putting a new tree in the same spot, or running a footing over it, we chase the roots deeper, usually 400 to 500mm, sometimes more.

When the grinding's done you're left with a mix of fine chip, soil and root fibre in the hole. That fill drops as the wood rots, and on a slope a slumped patch becomes a wash-out, so for anything you care about, turf, paving or a new planting, we suggest pulling the chip out and backfilling with topsoil. We can do that as a line item, or you can shovel it yourself. Either way the stump is gone and the spot's ready to move on.

Stump Grinding FAQs

How deep does the grinder go?

Standard is 200 to 300mm under the surface, which suits turf, garden beds or paving sand. For a footing, a slab, or replanting in the same spot we go to 400 to 500mm, deeper if the species and roots allow. Tell us what's going in and we'll match the depth.

Will the grinder fit a narrow Ferntree Gully side gate on a slope?

If the gate is 900mm clear or wider, yes, and the walk-behind handles a grade most machines can't. For anything narrower, or an inside courtyard, we walk it on the quote and either crane the smaller machine in or work it down with a lighter tool.

What's left in the hole when you're done?

A blend of chip, root fibre and disturbed soil, roughly level with the ground. That fill drops as the wood rots, so for lawn or paving, and on any slope, we'd suggest pulling the chip out and backfilling with screened topsoil. For a garden bed you can leave it, mix in compost, and give it a season before planting anything precious.

Can you grind several stumps in one go?

Yes, and it works out cheaper per stump because we only mobilise once. Worth doing the lot if you've inherited a few old removals or the previous owners left a row along the back fence. Send through how many and rough widths and we'll quote them together.
